From failing eyesight to hearing loss, hair removal to tumor removal, healthcare has made great use of lasers in the past several decades. Using beams of light, physicians can slice through tissue, burn it away, or break it apart. Lasers are especially useful in dentistry, which requires precision and steady hands. Here are a few of the many benefits offered by laser dentistry.

Broad Treatment of Oral Issues

Because lasers in healthcare focus on tissue, dentistry employs lasers to treat various diseases and ailments of gums. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Alleviating pain from cold and canker sores
  • Treating root canal infections
  • Treating gum disease and inflammation
  • Removing damaged nerves and excess throat tissue
  • Exposing wisdom teeth

However, laser dentistry also offers treatment of hard tissue. Tooth sensitivity and cavity detection and treatment are some of the conditions commonly treated by laser dentistry. SurfCT.com founder Paul Vigario has voiced support for the use of lasers in dentistry, writing, “Lasers are an important part of dental technology.  A laser can create better outcomes for patients while helping practices create better overall dentistry.”

Minimal Discomfort

There’s nothing scarier for patients than a drill whirring inches from their faces. With lasers, there is little need for drills or anesthesia, which can minimize discomfort and anxiety surrounding a treatment or surgery. Much of the discomfort and pain caused by drills stems from vibrations, which even the steadiest of hands cannot fully control. Lasers, on the other hand, do not have any vibration, making them steadier and more accurate when treating sensitive parts of the mouth.

Reduced Post-Op Symptoms

Lasers are popular options for dentists and patients who want to minimize post-op risk factors as much as possible. Traditional drill techniques can lead to complications, such as infection and prolonged bleeding. Because lasers use precise vaporization methods rather than scraping methods, patients experience less bleeding and reduced amounts of bacteria in gum tissue and cavities. Lasers often negate the need for sutures or stitches due to their ability to cauterize incisions.

Safety Precautions

While a beam of intense light may sound just as terrifying as a drill, laser dentistry is a safe practice. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established a list of best laser-use practices in 2014. This list includes many rules you’re likely familiar with, including the need for laser safety eyewear and proper signage indicating areas of laser use. Behind the scenes, practices that use lasers must train all personnel in proper safety measures. All of these factors contribute to a safe and beneficial alternative to traditional tooth-drilling.

Paul Vigario and SurfCT have partnered with organizations such as BIOLASE, Inc. to promote laser dentistry. BIOLASE focuses on the minimally invasive aspects of laser dentistry.
